As permutations for the 2027 general elections begin to crystallise, political developments in Abia State suggest that Governor Alex Otti may be heading into a re-election contest under increasingly unfavourable conditions.
Recent electoral experiences across the country, including the last Edo State governorship election, have reinforced a familiar lesson in Nigerian politics: online visibility and media buzz do not necessarily translate into electoral success. In Edo, despite widespread social media enthusiasm for the Labour Party (LP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates, victory ultimately went to the All Progressives Congress (APC), backed by entrenched political structures and heavyweight actors, culminating in the emergence of Senator Monday Okpebholo as governor.
Political watchers believe Abia may be drifting toward a similar trajectory.
Sources across party lines indicate that leaders of the APC and PDP in Abia State are increasingly aligned in their resolve to ensure Governor Otti’s defeat in 2027.
While the APC has intensified internal reconciliation and grassroots mobilisation, the ruling Labour Party remains deeply fractured, weakened by unresolved leadership and legal disputes at both state and national levels.
The protracted supremacy battle between the faction aligned with Governor Otti and the group loyal to LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, has significantly eroded party cohesion. This crisis has had practical consequences on the ground, with Abia State currently operating local government councils led by chairmen elected on the platform of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), further diluting LP’s organisational control at the grassroots.
Opposition parties have also accused the Otti administration of excessive centralisation of power. Both the APC and PDP allege that governance in the state has been reduced to a “one-man show,” with weak internal consultation and limited institutional checks.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Partners, a support group mobilising for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, Abia APC Chairman, Dr Kingsley C. Ononogbu, dismissed what he described as manufactured narratives surrounding the state.
“When we read and listen to the praises on social media, one wonders if it is the same Abia State we live in,” he said. “Abia State today is nothing but a one-man show driven by propaganda. Accountability is missing, checks and balances are absent, and conflict of interest has become normal.”
Ononogbu further alleged that the governor had turned the newly built Government House into a luxury facility while allegedly running state affairs from his private residence, an accusation the state government has yet to formally address.
The PDP has also raised concerns about financial transparency. In a statement signed by its then state Publicity Secretary, Mazi Eric Ikwuagwu, the party questioned project costs and budgetary figures published by the Abia State Government.
The PDP cited figures from official budget performance reports, including the N36.5 billion reportedly spent on the 5.7-kilometre Port Harcourt Road, as well as billions allocated to recreational facilities, capacity building and school renovations. The party noted that individuals who once subjected previous administrations to similar scrutiny are now being criticised for questioning the current government.
Internal dissatisfaction is also surfacing within Governor Otti’s political base. A known supporter of the governor and partisan blogger, Iroegbu Emenike, recently issued a stern public warning to the governor’s appointees, accusing many of abandoning grassroots politics.
“Every politics is local,” Emenike wrote. “If you fail to deliver your polling unit, ward or LGA in 2027, then you have failed completely.”
He accused aides of being absent from their communities, alienating party loyalists and creating openings that opposition parties are already exploiting.
Meanwhile, the APC continues to flaunt its grassroots depth, anchored on long-standing political structures such as the Orji Uzor Kalu (OUK) Movement and the Reality Organisation, active across virtually every polling unit in the state.
Other influential political figures, including former Governors Theodore Orji and Okezie Ikpeazu, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu and Chinedum Orji, are said to command loyal networks capable of shaping electoral outcomes.
With opposition parties consolidating, the ruling party mired in internal crises, and discontent growing within the governor’s own political camp, analysts say the political terrain ahead of 2027 appears increasingly hostile for Governor Otti.
