Barely two weeks after an earlier meeting between political leaders loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, both camps have held another round of talks aimed at consolidating ongoing reconciliation efforts in the state.

Wike led a delegation that included mainly members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, among them Speaker Martin Amaewhule, and the 23 local government council chairmen. They met with Governor Fubara and his supporters at the governor’s private residence in Port Harcourt. Also present was the APC governorship candidate, Kingsley Chinda.
The latest meeting marks another attempt by the political leaders to build on previous engagements and strengthen efforts to resolve the protracted political crisis that has polarised Rivers State and strained relations between Governor Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly.
The crisis has its roots in the political disagreement between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike. It has been marked by intense political manoeuvring, divisions within the Assembly, and several attempts by lawmakers led by Amaewhule to impeach the governor.
Tensions escalated in October 2023 when a split within the Assembly was followed by a fire that destroyed a section of the Assembly complex. The dispute later drew the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, who declared a state of emergency in Rivers State in March 2025. The emergency rule led to the suspension of the governor, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly, heightening concerns about the state’s political stability before the elected officials eventually returned to office.
