The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Barrister Julius Abure, has described the just-concluded ward, local government, and state congresses held across 35 states of the federation as a resounding success and “one of the most transparent party congresses in Nigeria.”
In a statement released on Saturday by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, Abure praised party members and leaders for allowing full internal democracy to prevail, stressing that no form of interference or imposition was recorded throughout the exercise, which commenced with ward congresses on Tuesday and ended on Saturday.
“The monitoring teams deployed by the National Working Committee have not received a single negative report from any part of the country. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies that monitored the process have equally commended its transparency and peaceful conduct,” the statement read.
Abure noted that the congresses served as a successful test of the reforms introduced by his leadership, adding that the outcome reaffirmed the principle that “no individual is bigger than the party” and that every member must submit to the authority and laid-down rules of the Labour Party.
The only exception was Abia State, which was excluded from the exercise following a court injunction allegedly procured by individuals working for the state government. The party stated that, as a law-abiding organisation, it obeyed the court order but has instructed its legal team to move swiftly to vacate the injunction so that congresses can be conducted in the state without further delay.
With the congresses concluded and new executives elected at all levels in 35 states, Abure declared that the Labour Party has “constructively put our challenges behind us” and is now fully prepared for the 2027 general elections.
He urged all members nationwide to rally behind the newly elected state executives, expressing confidence that the party will surpass its performance in the 2023 elections.
“The Labour Party is stronger, more united, and better organised than ever before. We are ready to take our rightful place as the leading platform for the Nigerian masses,” Abure said.
