The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has spoken candidly about the level of criticism he faces in office, stating that he is one of the most criticized political figures in Nigeria, second only to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Wike made the remarks in a video interview shared by Arise TV, where he reflected on the public reaction to his decisions and policies since assuming office as FCT minister.
According to him, criticism has become a constant feature of his political career, with nearly every action he takes attracting backlash from different quarters. He said that regardless of the intention behind his policies, there are always those who interpret them negatively.
In his words, “There is no abuse I think any politician has gotten more than me. After president, it is me that is getting the highest abuse. There is nothing we do that we won’t get abused, they’ll say, ‘Oh, he has come to take our land’. Well what is important to me, I want to be concentrated to do the job,” Wike said.
The former governor of Rivers State explained that many of the criticisms directed at him are linked to reforms and enforcement actions in the FCT, particularly in areas such as land administration, urban planning, and the removal of illegal structures. These initiatives, he noted, often generate resistance from affected individuals and groups.
Wike acknowledged that governance, especially in a complex environment like the nation’s capital, requires taking difficult decisions that may not always be popular. However, he maintained that his focus remains on delivering results rather than seeking public approval.
