Adeniyi Kayode, the chauffeur driving British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, could face a life sentence following a fatal road accident in Ogun State, Nigeria.
Kayode, 47, was behind the wheel of a black Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary truck carrying soya beans on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway last week. The crash claimed the lives of Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, both aged 36.
Joshua and Kayode survived the accident without serious injuries. Reports indicate the boxer narrowly escaped death after swapping seats with Ayodele shortly before the journey from Lagos to Sagamu.
Kayode appeared before a magistrate court in Sagamu on Friday, where he was charged with dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without a valid licence, and driving without due care, resulting in damage to property and bodily harm. If found guilty, he could face life imprisonment.
Meanwhile, authorities say efforts are ongoing to locate the driver of the truck, which was allegedly parked illegally on the highway, a route notorious for deadly accidents.
