National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka announced the decision this Wednesday, May 6, 2026, stating that as an incumbent previously screened in 2022, a repeat appearance was unnecessary and in the best interest of the party.

The waiver follows broad endorsements from the Progressive Governors Forum and the APC National Assembly caucus. Despite the President’s cleared status, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda noted that the party has kept the presidential contest open to other aspirants to foster competition.

Addressing the recent political realignments, Yilwatda downplayed the impact of the newly formed New Democrats Coalition (NDC) and the defection of 17 lawmakers from the ADC. He argued that the current political landscape is no longer “APC versus opposition” but rather “opposition versus opposition.”

Yilwatda expressed confidence in the party’s 2027 prospects, noting that the influx of aspirants across all geopolitical zones reflects the APC’s enduring strength while the opposition remains fractured by internal crises.
