The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released the timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, fixing Saturday, February 20, 2027, as the date for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow two weeks later, on Saturday, March 6, 2027.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the announcement during a news conference in Abuja on Friday. He stated that the release of the timetable and schedule of activities complies with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022.
The announcement comes despite ongoing concerns about the delayed passage of the amended Electoral Act, which is currently before the National Assembly.
INEC had earlier indicated on February 4 that it had completed work on the election timetable and schedule of activities, even amid the legislative delay. The commission submitted its proposed timetable to lawmakers but noted that certain aspects of the schedule could be subject to adjustment depending on when the amended Act is eventually passed and assented to.
The release marks the formal commencement of preparations for the 2027 polls, with other key activities, such as continuous voter registration, party primaries, and campaign periods, expected to follow the outlined timeline.
