In a significant development amid the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, four members of the State House of Assembly have publicly called on their colleagues to withdraw the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Odu.
The latest appeal came on Tuesday from Hon. Barile Nwakoh (representing Khana Constituency I) and Hon. Emilia Amadi (representing Obio/Akpor Constituency II). Their statement followed a similar position taken on Monday by House Minority Leader Hon. Sylvanus Eyinna Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency) and Hon. Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency).
The four lawmakers have openly advocated for restraint, dialogue, and alternative approaches to resolving the escalating standoff between the legislative and executive arms of government. The appeals were made during separate announcements and a joint press briefing held in Port Harcourt.
Speaking on Monday, Minority Leader Nwankwo disclosed that the decision to call for leniency was influenced by numerous interventions and pleas from prominent leaders both within and outside Rivers State. He urged his colleagues to reconsider the impeachment process and prioritize peaceful solutions, even while acknowledging alleged constitutional infractions by the governor and his deputy.
“Even though the governor and deputy governor may have infringed on the constitution, we urge our colleagues to temper justice with mercy, explore dialogue, and seek an amicable resolution,” Nwankwo stated during the briefing.
Hon. Peter Abbey echoed this view, emphasizing a human-centered approach to the crisis. He noted that while mistakes may have occurred, including possible violations of constitutional provisions, it is important to recognize that such errors can happen and to focus on preventing future breaches.
“Governor Fubara also has a responsibility to ensure that such breaches do not recur,” Abbey added, stressing the importance of reconciliation for the stability of the state.
The impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu were formally initiated last Thursday, January 8, 2026, with notices of alleged gross misconduct served on the pair. The move has significantly heightened political tensions in the state.
The recent interventions by the four assembly members indicate emerging divisions within the House and could influence the direction of the process as the Rivers State House of Assembly prepares to reconvene for plenary on January 15, 2026.
