Abuja – The Nat’l President of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG), Comr. Akpovoke Otiti, has appealed to Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to prioritize electricity infrastructure and ensure a 24-hour uninterrupted power supply across the state as a foundation for economic growth and industrial development.
Otiti argued that meaningful industrialization cannot be achieved without a reliable electricity supply, stressing that power remains the most critical requirement for attracting investors and creating sustainable jobs.
“We cannot talk about industrialization without electricity. The first thing Delta State needs is 24-hour uninterrupted power supply.
Once we achieve stable electricity, the state will naturally become attractive to investors and manufacturers,” he said.
The media executive urged the state government to temporarily shift its focus from flyover bridge projects and channel greater attention and resources toward solving the state’s electricity challenges.
According to him, a stable power supply would stimulate economic activities, encourage entrepreneurship, and reduce dependence on government employment and political appointments.
“If Delta State has 24 hour electricity, many people will no longer be seeking appointments. They will be engaged in productive ventures and private businesses,” Otiti stated.
He expressed concern over what he described as the growing dominance of commercial tricycle (Keke) operations and Point-of-Sale (POS) services as major sources of livelihood in the state, noting that these businesses reflect the absence of large scale industrial and manufacturing activities.
“Delta State is gradually becoming a hub for Keke transportation and POS industry. While these ventures provide income for many families, they cannot replace the economic benefits that come with industrialization and large-scale investments,” he said.
Otiti further maintained that Delta State possesses vast land resources capable of accommodating diverse industries and manufacturing concerns, but warned that investors would continue to look elsewhere if the challenge of inadequate electricity remains unresolved.
He added that reliable power would boost productivity, enhance the ease of doing business, and position Delta as one of Nigeria’s leading destinations for domestic and foreign investments.
The GOMEP-NG President therefore called on the Oborevwori administration to develop a comprehensive power strategy that would guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply and unlock the state’s economic potential.
“Delta has the land, the human resources, and the strategic location required for industrial growth. What is missing is reliable electricity. Once power becomes stable and available round the clock, industries will emerge, jobs will be created, and the state’s economy will experience rapid transformation,” Otiti said.
