The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that a “Christian genocide” is taking place in Nigeria, describing the allegation as false, divisive, and dangerous.

In a statement released on Wednesday, ECOWAS said the remarks were a deliberate attempt to inflame religious tensions, destabilize the region, and undermine ongoing peace and security efforts in West Africa.
The regional bloc reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s sovereignty and commended efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to promote religious freedom and national unity.
“Such claims threaten to undo decades of regional progress in fostering peaceful coexistence among diverse faith communities,” ECOWAS warned, urging all international partners to avoid rhetoric capable of inciting division.
