Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties this Friday to reach the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the match ended 1-1 following extra time.

The Round of 32 match was played in Texas, where Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the winning penalty to send Egypt into the next round for the first time in the country’s World Cup history.
Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in the 13th minute before Mohamed Hany’s own goal brought Australia level, forcing the match into extra time and eventually penalties.
Mohamed Salah converted his penalty in the shootout as Egypt sealed victory and booked a last-16 clash with either defending champions Argentina or tournament debutants Cape Verde.
