The Federal Government has confirmed that the United States carried out airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria’s North West following intelligence and security cooperation between both countries.
The confirmation was made in a statement released on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to the ministry, Nigeria is working closely with international partners, including the United States, through structured security and intelligence cooperation to tackle terrorism and violent extremism.
The statement said the collaboration led to precision airstrikes on terrorist locations in the North West, based on intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and mutual security agreements.
The ministry stressed that all counter terrorism actions respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and are carried out in line with international law.
It added that the protection of civilian lives, national unity and the rights of all Nigerians remain a top priority, regardless of religion or ethnic background.
The government noted that terrorist attacks against any group, whether Christians, Muslims or others, are unacceptable and pose a threat to both Nigeria and global peace.
The statement followed comments by US President Donald Trump, who earlier claimed that American forces had carried out strikes against Islamic State fighters in Northwestern Nigeria.
Trump said the operation was ordered by him and warned that further action could follow if terrorist attacks continue.
In a separate post, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the operation was carried out with the cooperation and support of the Nigerian government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria would continue working with its partners to weaken terrorist groups, disrupt their funding and stop cross border threats.
The airstrikes came shortly after a deadly bomb attack on a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, which killed several people and injured many others.
The government said it would continue to update the public through official channels.
