The Federal Government has dismissed reports claiming it plans to introduce new taxes on telecommunications services and petroleum products.
The clarification was made in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance through its Head of Information and Public Relations, Efe Ovuakporie.
The government said the reports misrepresented recommendations contained in the International Monetary Fund’s Article IV Consultation Report on Nigeria.
It explained that IMF recommendations are only advisory and do not automatically become government policy.
The Federal Government also stated that the VAT waiver on petroleum products remains in place and that no process is underway to introduce a fuel surcharge.
It further noted that the telecommunications excise duty introduced before 2023 has been repealed and is no longer applicable.
The government assured Nigerians that any future tax measures would be announced through official channels and implemented in line with the law.
