A former maths teacher, Rebecca Joynes, 30, has been struck off and banned from teaching indefinitely after being jailed for offences involving two of her students, including one with whom she later had a child while on bail.
Joynes was sentenced to six and a half years in prison last year after being convicted of multiple counts of engaging in sexual activity with minors while in a position of trust. A professional misconduct panel ruled that her actions amounted to unacceptable professional conduct and had brought the teaching profession into disrepute.
The incidents began in 2021 when Joynes targeted a 15-year-old pupil in her class, leading to an investigation after allegations surfaced. She was arrested and bailed on the condition that she did not contact anyone under 18.
Despite this, Joynes became involved with a second pupil, initially aged 15, which later led to a sustained illegal relationship. The misconduct panel described her actions as serious breaches of professional boundaries and abuse of her position of trust.
During sentencing, Judge Kate Cornell described Joynes’ behaviour as showing “breathtaking gall” and “astonishing arrogance.” The panel chairman, Phil Thompson, said her actions undermined public confidence in the teaching profession.
Joynes sobbed as she was jailed in July last year, and the indefinite prohibition order now ensures she will never be allowed to teach again.
