The Rivers State House of Assembly has vowed to proceed with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, despite earlier calls for a political resolution.
Speaking at a live press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday, the lawmakers accused Governor Fubara of blackmail, constitutional breaches and intimidation of the legislature, insisting he no longer enjoys the trust required to resolve the state’s political crisis.
They said the House was left with no option but to exercise its constitutional powers, adding that the impeachment move was lawful and necessary. The lawmakers also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for intervening in the crisis and urged Speaker Martin Amaewhule to reconvene the Assembly.
In a major twist, four lawmakers who had previously called for dialogue and a political solution recanted their earlier positions and openly declared support for the impeachment process.
Shortly after the press briefing, the lawmakers proceeded to the Assembly chambers to commence a parliamentary session, signalling renewed momentum for the impeachment move.
