ONITSHA – After five painful years behind bars for an offence he maintains he never committed, 25-year-old plumber Ifesinachi (surname withheld for privacy) finally regained his freedom on November 30, 2025, following a successful no-case submission filed by human-rights lawyers.

In 2019, while returning from a plumbing job with his tools, Ifesinachi was arrested by a police patrol team along Upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra State. Despite repeatedly identifying himself as a plumber, officers accused him of being a thief, beat him severely, and forced a confession from him before charging him to court. He was then remanded at the Onitsha Correctional Centre, where he would remain for the next half-decade without justice.

Upon his release, an emotional Ifesinachi told reporters that the experience shattered his life. “I was just a plumber going home. I begged them, showed them my tools, but they beat me until I couldn’t talk again. Five years of my life gone just like that,” he said softly, moments after dropping to his knees to thank God at the prison gate. His family, waiting anxiously outside, broke into tears as they embraced him.

Lawyers from the Justice Project, led by Barr. Chijioke Ifeanyi, condemned the case as a glaring example of systemic failure. Ifeanyi said the team would pursue compensation and push for disciplinary action against the officers involved. “This young man lost his youth because of wrongful arrest, torture, and malicious prosecution. We will not stop at his release,” he said.

The Anambra State Police Command has yet to comment on the circumstances surrounding the arrest or explain why the case lingered without proper trial for five years.

Public outrage has grown since the story broke, reigniting debates on police brutality, wrongful incarceration, and the urgent need for sweeping reforms in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

Welcome home, Ifesinachi. May the years stolen be restored.
