Police in Imo State have arrested a 43-year-old man, Kelechi Nwosu, from Umuobi Umukam in Obollo Autonomous Community, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, on allegations of defiling his seven-year-old niece.
Nwosu was initially detained by community members before being handed over to officers at the Isiala Mbano Divisional Headquarters. He was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri for further investigation.
The case came to light through the intervention of the human rights group Stand For Humanity Foundation, which collaborated with the suspect’s kinsmen to ensure his arrest.
Chidiebube Okeoma, coordinator of the foundation, stated that medical examinations conducted at the police clinic in Owerri confirmed the child had been sexually abused. According to the minor’s account, the assaults occurred on two separate occasions when family members were away at the farm.
The foundation praised the youths of the community for their role in upholding justice and called on other communities in Imo State and beyond to follow suit in combating child abuse.
It also commended the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the SCID in Owerri for his professional handling of the case since it was reported.
Imo State Police Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed that Nwosu remains in custody and will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of the investigation.
