The Abia State Police Command has arrested Edward Okorie, a native of Isiugwu in Ohafia Local Government Area, for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Sophy Chika, a young nurse, during a domestic dispute.

The incident occurred on Monday in Okagwe village, Ohafia, where the couple had been cohabiting for over three years. Community sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity citing security concerns, said a minor argument between the pair escalated violently in the early hours of the day, resulting in Chika being beaten to death.

Chika, who hailed from Ozu Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, was reportedly killed by Okorie, an indigene of Isiugwu Ohafia, over what sources described as a “minor misunderstanding” that turned tragic.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia had briefed her on the matter.

“Yes, the attention of the Divisional Police Headquarters, Ohafia, was called to it. The suspect has been apprehended, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Umuahia, today by the DPO,” Chinaka stated.

The case has since been moved to the SCID in Umuahia for a thorough investigation.
