Kano, 23 January 2026 – Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent internal disputes and legal challenges that have weakened the party’s cohesion.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf thanked the party for its support since 2022 but said his decision was guided by the need to safeguard the interests of the people of Kano State.

“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable,” the Governor said. “After careful reflection, I have concluded that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State.”

Governor Yusuf’s resignation extends to 21 State Assembly members, 8 House of Representatives members, and 44 Local Government Chairmen. The NNPP Secretary for Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the resignation and commended the Governor’s achievements in infrastructure, health, education, and economic empowerment.

The Governor emphasized that his decision was made in good faith and with continued commitment to peace, unity, and progress in Kano State.
