Kuwait’s football community is in mourning following the death of former defender Fahad Al-Mejmed, who passed away at the age of 33 while serving as a security officer in the country’s border forces.
The Ministry of Interior of Kuwait confirmed that Al-Mejmed died on March 6 while on duty with the General Directorate of Land Border Security, where he held the rank of major.
According to the ministry, he and Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Emad Al-Sharrah were killed at dawn while carrying out national security operations. Authorities later honoured both men as “martyrs of duty.”
The incident occurred during a period of heightened security tension across the Gulf following escalating regional conflict involving strikes on Iran.
Kuwait has since reinforced security measures along its borders, although officials have not released detailed circumstances surrounding the operation that led to the officers’ deaths.
Before dedicating himself fully to military service, Al-Mejmed built a respected career in Kuwaiti football.
The central defender began his professional journey with Al‑Qadsia SC, one of the country’s most decorated clubs, before later featuring for Kazma SC and eventually Al‑Salmiya SC.
It was at Al-Salmiya where he enjoyed the most prominent spell of his career. From 2019 onwards, Al-Mejmed became a defensive cornerstone for the club and served as captain for several seasons, earning admiration for both his leadership and consistency at the back.
Only a few months before his death, he announced his retirement from professional football during a league match between Al-Salmiya and Al‑Arabi SC, choosing to focus entirely on his military duties.
Following the tragic news, Al-Salmiya released an emotional tribute to their former captain.
“With great sadness and sorrow, the president, board members, and all affiliates of Al-Salmiya Club extend their sincere condolences to the families of the two martyrs and to the Kuwaiti people following the death of Major Fahad Abdulaziz Al-Majmad, a player of Al-Salmiya Club, and Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Emad Al-Sharrah, who were martyred while performing their national duty,” the club said in a statement.
Tributes also poured in from Al‑Arabi SC, Al‑Qadsia SC and the Kuwait Football Association, all paying respect to a player remembered not only for his commitment on the pitch but also for his service to his country.
Al-Mejmed leaves behind a legacy that bridged sport and national service, with many in Kuwait remembering him as both a dedicated football leader and a soldier who died in the line of duty.
