Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, will remain in prison custody until Wednesday when the Federal High Court in Abuja will rule on his bail request. His son, Abdulaziz, and a company employee were also arraigned.
The EFCC charged Malami and the others with 16 counts of money laundering involving about N9 billion, allegedly hidden through companies, bank accounts, and property purchases in Abuja, Kebbi, and Kano.
While Malami’s lawyer asked the court to grant bail, arguing the charges are bailable, the EFCC opposed the request. The anti-graft agency said Malami poses a flight risk and could influence witnesses.
Justice Nwite adjourned the matter to Wednesday after hearing both sides. Malami, who denies the charges, said his trial is politically motivated following the revocation of his administrative bail after he attended a political rally.
