The Governing Council of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), has appointed Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa as the institution’s 7th Vice-Chancellor, making her the first woman to hold the position in the university’s history.
The announcement was made to the press by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Comrade Fidelis Chukwunweike Edeh, immediately following the 95th meeting of the Council, where the report of the Selection Panel was reviewed and approved.
Professor Akanwa, a distinguished academic and currently serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) at MOUAU, will assume office on March 1, 2026. She succeeds the outgoing 6th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, whose tenure concludes at the end of February.
A Professor of Educational Measurement and Evaluation, Akanwa joined MOUAU in 2010 as an Associate Professor after serving at Abia State University, Uturu. She was promoted to full Professor in 2014. Her career at the university has included significant administrative roles, culminating in her appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) in October 2025.
The university community and stakeholders have expressed optimism about the new era of leadership under Professor Akanwa, who becomes a trailblazer as MOUAU’s first female Vice-Chancellor.
