The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised concerns over rising attacks on schools, warning that the safety of students and the future of Nigeria’s education system are at serious risk. The alert follows recent violent incidents, including the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where the vice-principal was also killed.
Earlier, armed men targeted St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, abducting both students and staff. NANS said these assaults are “deliberate and strategic offensives by criminal elements seeking to induce widespread educational displacement and institutional breakdown.”
The students’ association further warned that “the constant threat of violence is forcing students into an impossible choice between pursuing education and protecting their personal safety.” They stressed that such a reality “threatens the stability, development, and global standing of Nigeria.”
NANS called on the federal government and security agencies to act decisively. Ajasa urged: “The era of piecemeal interventions and reactionary measures must end… The unconditional rescue and reintegration of every abducted student must stand as an urgent national priority.” He added, “NANS remains steadfast, vigilant, and uncompromising… Our advocacy will remain formidable and unyielding until the security of every Nigerian student is guaranteed without ambiguity or exception.”
