Nigeria and South Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen inter-parliamentary cooperation and strengthen democratic governance between the two countries.
The agreement was signed this Friday at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja by officials from Nigeria’s legislative support body and South Africa’s Gauteng Provincial Legislature, with South Africa’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bobby Moroe, represented by Deputy Head of Mission Madam Lindi Mminele.
The MoU is aimed at promoting collaboration, knowledge exchange, and capacity building between the legislative institutions of both countries while supporting stronger intra-African cooperation and continental initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Director-General of NILDS, Abubakar Suleiman, highlighted the shared democratic values of Nigeria and South Africa and noted that despite structural differences in their legislative systems, both parliaments have similar responsibilities in lawmaking, oversight, and management of public resources.
Both countries expressed optimism that the MoU will enhance institutional development, facilitate productive engagements, and help translate continental goals into practical actions that benefit citizens and governments alike.
