The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it will hold a nationwide protest on December 17 over worsening insecurity. This was announced in a communiqué issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos, jointly signed by Joe Ajaero and Benson Upah.
The NLC condemned the abduction of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and the killing of a school staffer, saying it was disturbed by the “withdrawal of security personnel from the affected school prior to the attack.” It described the growing attacks on schools as “alarming.”
The NEC said it would mobilise all affiliates for the protest and demanded an investigation into the security lapses. It also discussed problems in the education and health sectors, as well as the need to revive Labour–Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) and realign the Labour Party with “working-class principles, ideology and integrity.”
The NLC warned that failure to act on insecurity could lead to wider strikes, stressing that workers’ welfare is a priority. It said the planned protest would be “peaceful but resolute” and urged government to intensify protection for vulnerable communities.
