President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has strongly condemned the suicide bombing that struck a mosque in Maiduguri Borno State on Christmas Eve declaring that no Nigerian should suffer persecution violence or death because of their religious belief and assuring the nation that his administration remains committed to protecting freedom of worship for all citizens.
The President described the attack which claimed the lives of at least five worshippers and left thirty five others injured as cowardly and barbaric noting that the targeting of innocent civilians during prayers represents an assault on the very foundation of Nigeria’s unity and shared humanity.
In a statement issued late Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended his condolences to the families of the victims as well as the government and people of Borno State. He also prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the blast.
The President reaffirmed that his government will not relent in the fight against terrorism insurgency and violent extremism stressing that attacks on religious institutions whether mosques churches or other places of worship will not be tolerated under any guise.
He assured Nigerians that security agencies have been placed on high alert and are intensifying operations across the country particularly during the yuletide period to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property.
President Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria belongs to all its citizens regardless of faith ethnicity or region and vowed that the constitutional right to practise religion freely and without fear remains non negotiable under his administration.
The statement follows the deadly explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Ward Maiduguri where a suspected suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device during Maghrib prayers sparking nationwide outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity in the North East.
While no group has officially claimed responsibility security agencies believe the attack bears the hallmarks of Boko Haram insurgents whose violent campaign has plagued the region for over a decade.
As investigations continue the federal government says it is working closely with Borno State authorities and security forces to track down those responsible and ensure they face justice.
The President urged Nigerians to remain united vigilant and supportive of security agencies noting that terrorism thrives on division fear and mistrust.
