Pandemonium broke out on Sunday in Kano as angry fans of Kano Pillars Football Club invaded the pitch during their NPFL clash with Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan.
Trouble reportedly began after a contentious officiating decision, prompting a section of the home supporters to storm the field. The referee was attacked and forced to flee for safety as security personnel struggled to contain the situation.
Players of the visiting 3SC side were also targeted by the mob, resulting in tense scenes that disrupted the match. Tear gas was fired by security operatives to disperse the violent crowd and restore order.
As of press time, the extent of injuries or damages remained unclear, while the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) management is expected to review the incident and impose possible sanctions
