The House of Representatives has commenced moves to establish a comprehensive national framework for the control and regulation of alcohol consumption in Nigeria.
The proposed legislation, which passed its first reading this Thursday, aims to regulate the production, advertisement, and consumption of alcoholic beverages to address rising public health concerns.
Sponsor of the bill, Chairman of the House Adhoc Committee on Drug Trafficking, Tobacco and Alcohol Abuse, Oluwatimehin Adelegbe, explained that the law is not a prohibition but a protective measure designed to safeguard minors and vulnerable groups from alcohol-related harm.
The bill seeks to introduce stricter safeguards against underage access and align Nigeria’s alcohol policies with international standards to reduce social issues like drunk driving and domestic violence.
Lawmakers have invited industry stakeholders to participate in upcoming public hearings to ensure the final legal framework balances public health with the legitimate interests of manufacturers.
