The Rivers State Government has shut down five hospitals and a patent drug store over alleged child trafficking, quack medical practices and other illegal activities.
The enforcement action was carried out this Tuesday following investigations by the state’s Anti-Quackery Committee, with support from security agencies.
Chairman of the committee, Vincent Wachukwu, said seven suspects were arrested during the operation, while some of the affected facilities were allegedly operated by unqualified individuals without the required licences.
Wachukwu said one of the hospital operators was accused of trafficking babies by allegedly deceiving mothers that their newborns had died and exchanging them with dead infants before selling the living babies.
He added that the affected facilities have been sealed, while investigations and prosecution of the suspects are ongoing.
