The National Assembly is in mourning following the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South Senatorial District. Ubah died at the age of 52 in the United Kingdom on Saturday, where he had traveled for medical treatment. His death marks the sixth among federal lawmakers since the 2023 general elections.
Elected to the Senate in 2019 under the Young Progressive Party (YPP) and re-elected in 2023, Ubah later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He had intended to run for the governorship of Anambra State in the 2025 off-cycle election.
Just two weeks prior, Ekene Abubakar Adams, a House of Representatives member from Kaduna State’s Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, passed away at 39 after a prolonged illness. Adams, who was a sports enthusiast and former football player, chaired the House Committee on Sports. He had previously managed Nigeria Premier Football League teams Remo Stars and Kada City before his political career began.
Shortly before Adams’ death, the House of Representatives lost another member, Rep. Olaide Adewale Akinremi of Oyo State’s Ibadan North Federal Constituency. Akinremi, who died after a brief illness at 51, was known for his dedication to public service and chaired the House Committee on Science Research Institutions.
Earlier this year, on May 10, Rep. Isa Dogonyaro of Jigawa State’s Garki/Babura Federal Constituency passed away. His colleague, Mohammed Bello El-Rufa’i, announced Dogonyaro’s death, praising him as a brilliant parliamentarian.
In October 2023, Rep. Abdulkadir Jelani Danbuga from Sokoto State’s Isa-Sabon Birni Federal Constituency died after a short illness. He was survived by his family, including two wives and numerous children and grandchildren.
The series of losses began in April 2023 with the death of Rep. Ismaila Maihanci, who had just won the seat for Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency in Taraba State. Maihanci, who passed away at 36, had previously served as a Special Adviser to the Taraba State Governor and as the Secretary of the PDP in Taraba State.
The National Assembly continues to grieve these significant losses, reflecting on the contributions and legacies of these dedicated public servants.
