The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday passed for second reading the Electric Vehicle Transition Bill, 2025.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia North, aims to establish a national framework to promote electric vehicles, boost local manufacturing, ensure environmental sustainability, and position Nigeria as a leader in clean energy transportation across Africa.
Senator Kalu led the debate, explaining that the bill seeks to revolutionize Nigeria’s automobile and energy sectors by encouraging innovation, local assembly, and environmental protection. The initiative is also set to create thousands of jobs within the manufacturing value chain.
This bill is a critical step forward in aligning Nigeria with global environmental and technological trends.
In his remarks, President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio described the bill as a forward-looking legislative initiative that complements President Bola Tinubu’s economic diversification goals and global energy transition.
The bill has now been referred to the Senate Committee on Industry for detailed scrutiny and the committee is expected to present its report within four weeks.
Nigeria moves a step closer to embracing electric vehicles as the Senate advances this innovative legislation.
