The Anambra Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bridget Asekhauno has confirmed the death of six people in a crash involving a truck and a bus at the Nawfia axis, near Enugu-Agidi Junction, along the Awka–Onitsha expressway on Friday night.
She said the collision involved a yellow and black tipper with registration FGG21XV and a red bus with registration XQ398AA.
According to her, an eyewitness reported that the bus was travelling from Ebonyi to Onitsha after a Catholic Women Organisation burial. She explained that “The bus driver attempted dangerous overtaking to make up lost time, causing a head-on collision with the tipper.” The crash involved 32 people nine men and 23 women.
Asekhauno said two men and four women died, while five women were injured. Twenty-one other passengers survived without injuries. The victims were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where medical staff confirmed the deaths.
She described the accident as preventable, warning that “This tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving.” She also urged motorists to obey traffic laws and avoid dangerous overtaking. She reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to enforcing safety regulations and responding quickly to emergencies.
