The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has launched an investigation into the production and sale of counterfeit televisions at Alaba International Market in Lagos State, following a viral video exposing the practice.

The video showed stacks of TVs branded with logos of popular manufacturers like LG and Hisense, allegedly assembled locally from low-quality units and fraudulently labeled as genuine products. The narrator claimed that over 3,000 fake televisions were ready for sale.
Angela Okisor, SON’s Press Liaison Officer, confirmed that the agency is collaborating with market unions and security operatives to track those responsible and address the issue.
Residents and social media users have warned buyers to exercise caution, noting that counterfeit products are often repackaged to look like authentic items. Experts advise verifying serial numbers and purchasing electronics only from trusted distributors.
The investigation highlights ongoing concerns over consumer protection and the growing prevalence of counterfeit goods in Nigerian markets.
