The United Nations is facing a severe liquidity crisis, with Secretary-General António Guterres warning that the organization could run out of cash by mid-August.
According to reports, the crisis has been worsened by billions of dollars in unpaid contributions from the United States and China, which together provide about 42% of the UN’s core funding.
The cash shortage has forced the UN to cut spending, eliminate thousands of jobs, close offices, and reduce peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. Both countries say their financial decisions are tied to broader policy and reform concerns.
