United States Senator Ted Cruz has announced plans to introduce legislation that would sanction Nigerian officials responsible for enforcing Sharia and blasphemy laws, which he says fuel the persecution of Christians in the country.

In a statement posted on social media, the Texas senator thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for designating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious persecution, describing the move as “a critical step in holding Nigerian officials accountable.”
Cruz said his proposed bill seeks to strengthen that designation by targeting individuals who promote or enforce laws that criminalize blasphemy and impose Sharia-based punishments.
“I have fought for years to counter the slaughter and persecution of Christians in Nigeria,” Cruz said, vowing to work with the Trump administration to advance the legislation.

He praised President Trump’s decision as “a great one,” saying it demonstrates strong leadership and a firm commitment to defending religious freedom worldwide.
