The House of Representatives has thrown its weight behind the campaign for increased women’s representation in governance, declaring support for the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking to create special reserved seats for women in the National and State Houses of Assembly.

The House Committee on Youths in Parliament will lead the campaign for the bill, following its inauguration at an interactive session in Abuja organized by the Legislative Advocacy Committee on the Reserved Seats for Women Bill.
Chaired by Hon Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, the committee is mandated to mobilize lawmakers, sensitize the public, and galvanize broad-based support for the proposed legislation.
The bill, initiated under the leadership of Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, proposes the creation of 108 additional elective seats exclusively for women across federal and state legislatures, aimed at addressing the persistent gender imbalance in political representation.
Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, described the proposal as a significant step toward national development and the strengthening of Nigeria’s democratic image globally.
Stakeholders and civil society groups at the session expressed confidence that the political will demonstrated by the Speaker and the House leadership would ensure the bill’s passage.
