In a press statement issued on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the governor said the decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, friends, and associates.

Fubara described the move as a sacrifice made in the interest of the state, stressing that leadership sometimes requires personal ambition to give way to the greater good.

“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.

The governor expressed gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty, sacrifices, prayers, and commitment throughout the political process, acknowledging that many may feel disappointed by his decision.

He also hinted at behind-the-scenes pressures and difficult circumstances surrounding the development, noting that his silence in recent months had been “deliberate and strategic.”

“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” the statement read.

Fubara thanked the All Progressives Congress for the opportunity and support given to him during the process. He also appreciated Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement and support.

The governor urged APC members and supporters to remain united and committed to the party’s future, emphasizing that the APC remains their “collective home.”

Clarifying his position, Fubara said his withdrawal should not be interpreted as weakness, fear, or surrender, but as an act of conviction and sacrifice aimed at ensuring peace and unity in Rivers State.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his tenure.
