Fresh political tensions are brewing within the Labour Party in Aba North State Constituency as aggrieved stakeholders and party loyalists have intensified protests against the emergence of Mrs. Florence Ijeoma Ehuchie as the alleged sole anointed candidate for the Aba North State House of Assembly seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
What initially appeared to be a quiet internal disagreement has now snowballed into a full-scale political rebellion, with many party faithful warning that the Labour Party may once again be walking into another avoidable legal and electoral catastrophe capable of handing victory to opposition parties through the courts.
According to multiple party sources, concerns began immediately after reports emerged that Mrs. Ehuchie had allegedly been handed the Labour Party Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms with the backing of powerful forces within the government circle. Since then, stakeholders claim that she has neither officially declared her ambition before the Aba North political structure nor convened any meaningful meeting with ward leaders, grassroots mobilizers, party executives, or critical stakeholders within the constituency.
Party insiders allege that her continued silence and political isolation have deepened suspicions surrounding her eligibility status and long-standing relationship with the Labour Party structure in Aba North.
Several stakeholders who spoke under anonymity described the development as “political imposition capable of destroying the Labour Party’s credibility in Aba North.”
According to them, the party cannot afford another painful repeat of previous electoral victories that were eventually overturned by the courts due to technical and legal deficiencies surrounding candidates and party compliance issues.
Political stakeholders recalled how the Labour Party and its allies in Aba North have previously suffered devastating courtroom reversals despite winning at the polls.
One of such incidents involved former House of Representatives member, Hon. Emeka Nnamani, whose electoral victory was eventually lost through judicial proceedings, paving way for the emergence of Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh of APGA.
Similarly, former Aba North State Constituency lawmaker, Hon. Destiny Akaraka, despite initially securing electoral victory, also lost his mandate in court to the PDP candidate, Hon. Aaron Uzodike.
Today, many stakeholders fear history may once again repeat itself if the Labour Party proceeds with what critics describe as a “legally vulnerable candidacy.”
At the center of the growing controversy are allegations bordering on compliance with Labour Party membership regulations, electronic registration requirements, and constitutional provisions governing sponsorship of candidates for elections.
Party sources pointed to internal directives allegedly issued by the national leadership of the Labour Party warning that all aspirants who failed to complete their electronic membership (e-registration) registration on or before midnight of Monday, May 4, 2026, risked outright disqualification from contesting under the party platform.
Adding further fuel to the already raging controversy, investigations by concerned stakeholders and party insiders allegedly revealed that Mrs. Florence Ijeoma Ehuchie was reportedly advised by certain political actors to swear to an affidavit in an attempt to address questions surrounding her alleged failure to meet the Labour Party electronic membership registration deadline.
According to sources familiar with the internal developments, the affidavit was allegedly intended to serve as a legal explanation or justification regarding her membership status and participation in the Labour Party e-registration process before the expiration deadline announced by the party leadership.
However, legal analysts and party stakeholders argue that an affidavit may not automatically cure or override constitutional, electoral, and party procedural requirements where timelines and eligibility conditions are expressly stated and time-bound.
Political analysts insist that under Nigerian electoral jurisprudence, affidavits cannot substitute mandatory compliance where the law, party constitution, or official guidelines prescribe specific timelines for political participation, party membership validation, or candidate sponsorship.
Stakeholders raising concerns over the development pointed to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, as well as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which collectively emphasize lawful sponsorship, valid party membership, and strict adherence to internal party procedures.
According to legal analysts, where a political party fixes a deadline for membership regularization, electronic registration, or qualification of aspirants, such timelines may become materially significant during pre-election litigations, especially where opponents can establish evidence of non-compliance or procedural irregularities.
Some stakeholders further argued that affidavits are evidentiary documents subject to scrutiny and verification in court and cannot independently confer eligibility if underlying statutory or party requirements were allegedly not fulfilled within the stipulated timeframe.
The controversy has therefore triggered growing fears within the Aba North Labour Party structure that any loophole associated with candidate qualification, membership status, or nomination compliance could become fertile ground for opposition parties seeking judicial disqualification after the elections.
There are also increasing whispers within political circles regarding allegations that Mrs. Ehuchie may have had prior affiliations or registration history with another political party, a development some stakeholders insist must be transparently clarified before the party proceeds further with her candidacy.
Though no official legal pronouncement has been made regarding the allegations, party loyalists insist that failure to address these concerns early may hand opposition parties a ready-made legal weapon ahead of 2027.
The growing unrest appears to have created deep cracks within the Labour Party family in Aba North, as several influential grassroots coordinators and ward stakeholders are reportedly threatening to withdraw support from the party if what they termed “candidate imposition” continues unchecked.
Some members reportedly warned that they would neither mobilize nor campaign for any candidate imposed without due consultation and transparent participation of the Aba North political structure.
For many observers, the unfolding crisis is rapidly becoming a test of whether the Labour Party truly intends to uphold internal democracy, constitutional compliance, and transparent political processes or whether the party risks sacrificing electoral victory on the altar of favoritism and political entitlement.
