The body of a missing school pupil, Success Ezenwafor, has been found after he was swept away by floodwaters in Awka, Anambra State. The young boy was a pupil at UNIZIK Primary School .
The sad discovery was confirmed on Wednesday by the Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor .
The incident happened on Tuesday morning, September 22, 2026. Success was travelling in a shuttle bus with other schoolchildren along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka when the vehicle was caught in a heavy flood .
Family members say Success was a brave boy. When the flood trapped the vehicle, he reportedly broke one of the windows to create an escape route for others. Thanks to his action, other children were able to get out. Sadly, Success could not save himself and was swept away .
Two other children from the same family were involved in the incident but were rescued. In total, the police and local rescuers saved seven schoolchildren and two adults from the floodwaters. The rescued children are in stable condition and are receiving treatment at a hospital .
Success’s father remembers his final moments with his son before he left for school on Tuesday. According to a family member, the boy kissed his father on both cheeks, said goodbye, and boarded the bus. Tragically, he never returned home .
Following this tragedy, the Anambra State Government has issued a flood alert to all residents. They are urging people to be careful and to avoid moving around during heavy rain, as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has warned of serious flooding in the state this year .
