ABUJA – The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has called for stronger collaboration with the Federal Government to enhance national security through responsible online journalism and the timely dissemination of credible information to communities across the country.

The Guild said greater engagement between government institutions and online media organisations would improve public access to accurate information, help curb misinformation, and strengthen national cohesion.

The position was contained in a joint statement signed by the National President of GOMEP-NG, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, and the National Secretary, Clinton Uba, following a meeting with the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, in Abuja.

According to the statement, discussions at the meeting centred on building a sustainable partnership between the Federal Government and the online media sector, with a focus on promoting responsible journalism, effective public communication, and initiatives that support national security.

The Guild urged the Federal Government to carry GOMEP-NG along in ongoing policy reforms affecting the media industry, noting that online publishers and editors remain critical stakeholders in information management and public enlightenment.

“GOMEP-NG is committed to working with the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that citizens receive timely, accurate and reliable information, particularly on issues relating to national security and public safety,” the statement said.

The Guild also expressed its readiness to engage state governments in developing practical communication strategies that would strengthen security awareness at the grassroots, encourage citizens’ participation in intelligence sharing, and promote peaceful coexistence.

It reaffirmed its commitment to ethical journalism, professionalism, and constructive engagement with government agencies, stressing that closer collaboration between public institutions and the online media would contribute to national development, peace, and security.
