A young man identified as Chinedu Anamelechi from Umunga Amakama in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State has shot his girlfriend dead, stabbed her sister, and injured another person before committing suicide.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday in Umuanga Amakama Community.
The Abia State Police Command, while confirming the incident, said Chinedu Anamelechi took his own life inside a nearby bush after the attack. His corpse has been recovered and deposited in a mortuary.
According to the police, operatives responded swiftly to a distress call and arrived at the scene where they found the lifeless body of Ezinne Ariwodo, the suspect’s girlfriend, lying in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds.
The two injured victims — the deceased’s sister, who was stabbed, and another young man who was shot — were immediately rescued and rushed to hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Medical personnel confirmed Ezinne Ariwodo dead on arrival. Her body has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Relevant exhibits were recovered from the scene for investigation.
The police said normalcy has been restored in the community and urged residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
However, reports from the community indicate that angry youths set ablaze the house of the deceased suspect in retaliation.
The Abia State Police Command has appealed for calm as investigation into the incident continues.
