The Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia has successfully performed its first major brain surgery.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this Tuesday after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, describing the surgery as a major milestone in the state’s healthcare transformation.
The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, said the 19-year-old patient was brought to the hospital in a deep coma with severe bleeding in the brain that was compressing the brainstem and required immediate surgery.
Uche said more than 100 millilitres of blood clot was removed from the patient’s brain, adding that the young man has started moving his limbs while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.
