The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) has ordered the controlled demolition of a four-storey building located at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, after a structural inspection revealed serious defects that pose a collapse risk.

According to a press statement signed by the Director General of GADA, Arc. Uche Ukeje, officials from the Building Control Unit, Engineering Department, and Town Planning Department responded promptly to reports of visible cracks in the building.
A preliminary assessment found extensive cracks around the building’s foundation, indicating that the foundation had been severely compromised. The building has therefore been declared unsafe for habitation.
As a precautionary measure, all occupants were safely evacuated, while arrangements have been made for the building to be demolished in a controlled manner to prevent casualties and protect nearby properties.
GADA assured residents that there is no cause for panic, stating that the situation is under control and that all necessary safety measures have been put in place. The Authority also urged the public to stay away from the affected area and cooperate with officials as demolition and other safety operations continue.
An investigation has commenced to determine the cause of the structural failure. GADA further encouraged residents to promptly report any signs of structural distress in buildings to the appropriate authorities.
The statement was signed by Arc. Uche Ukeje, Director General, Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), and dated July 9, 2026.
