The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has disclosed that more than 50 percent of its candidates for the 2027 general elections emerged through consensus arrangements.

In a media interview on Thursday, the party’s National Spokesman, Osa Director, stated that the NDC remains committed to a transparent and inclusive democratic process despite alleged efforts by some individuals to sabotage the party by claiming it is no different from other political parties.

“Over 50% of NDC candidates emerged through consensus. The NDC is a party which is going to conduct itself in such a way that it is no longer business as usual. That is a promise we made to Nigerians,” Director said.

He described the party as a “bride attracting so many suitors,” noting that while only one aspirant can eventually emerge per position, no one is rejected in the NDC.

“Like my national chairman said, the NDC is a political Noah’s Ark that is going to serve as a vehicle to turn Nigeria to a destination of salvation, a destination where we shall embrace progress and development, and inclusive progress and development,” he added.

In a separate statement issued on Thursday, Osa Director, who also serves as the National Publicity Secretary of the party, denied allegations that the NDC imposed candidates on constituencies during its recently conducted primary elections.

Director explained that every aspirant who approached the party was duly received and directed to engage with the appropriate caucus leaders, stakeholders, and grassroots members in their respective states.

He said the party operates through an established stakeholder leadership structure with caucus heads across all states of the federation, guided by principles of leadership, consultation, inclusiveness, and consensus-building.

The spokesman reiterated the NDC’s commitment to promoting female participation in elective offices, noting that the party has already supported women in some cases.

“At no time has the NDC National Secretariat been involved in the business of picking, choosing, or imposing candidates on any constituency or state,” the statement read.

Director acknowledged reports of some aspirants prematurely declaring themselves as candidates and complaints from others regarding aspects of the process, adding that such issues have been referred to the party’s appeal panel and leadership for appropriate resolution.
