Qatar secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after battling to a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their Group B opener this Saturday.

The match was played in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Qatar came from behind with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.
Switzerland took the lead in the 13th minute when Breel Embolo converted a penalty after a foul by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. The Swiss dominated much of the encounter and created numerous scoring opportunities.
Qatar, however, refused to give up and found an equaliser four minutes into added time through veteran defender Boualem Khoukhi, whose header sparked celebrations among the Gulf nation’s players and coaching staff.
The result earned Qatar a historic first World Cup point in only their second appearance at the tournament, while Switzerland will be disappointed not to have secured all three points after controlling large periods of the match.
