The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly begun consultations on the choice of a vice presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, with indications that attention is focused on political figures from the South-East and South-South regions.

Sources close to the opposition campaign said the consultations are being personally coordinated by the former vice president and remain ongoing, with no final decision reached.

Political watchers believe the selection of a running mate could shape the electoral direction and coalition strength of the ADC ahead of the polls.

Among names reportedly receiving attention is former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who emerged second in the party’s presidential primary. While Amaechi has publicly dismissed claims that he has been offered the vice presidential slot, sources said his profile continues to feature in discussions because of his political experience and South-South reach.

Another figure said to be under consideration is former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, whose recent defection to the ADC and political standing in the South have reportedly made him a subject of internal consultations.

From the South-East, former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha is also being mentioned among individuals receiving attention in the ongoing deliberations.

Sources indicated that the current consultations reflect a pattern similar to Atiku’s previous presidential campaigns, where running mates were selected from southern Nigeria to complement northern presidential ambition.

Meanwhile, the party is also navigating internal leadership challenges that have attracted legal attention, creating additional pressure as preparations for the 2027 election cycle gather pace.
