Civil society groups on Monday staged a protest in Ibadan, Oyo State, demanding urgent action over the continued abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The protesters moved through parts of the city carrying placards with messages calling for stronger security measures and the safe rescue of the victims. Their demonstration followed earlier protests by teachers in Ogbomoso over the same incident.

The abduction, which occurred on May 15, 2026, has continued to generate public outrage and concern among education stakeholders, parents, and residents.

Teachers had earlier suspended classroom activities in Ogbomoso to demand action after the incident, which reportedly led to the death of one teacher. The development heightened concerns over the safety of schools and educational workers.

In response, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State wing, directed public primary and secondary school teachers to withdraw their services beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, until further notice, citing uncertainty surrounding the rescue of abducted pupils and teachers.

The union said the continued captivity of victims had created fear among teachers, discouraged parents from sending children to school, and increased tension across affected communities.

In a statement signed by the state chairman, Comrade Hassan Fatai, the NUT said the industrial action was intended to draw government attention to the urgency of securing the safe release of the abductees.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government announced fresh security measures following a visit by a high-powered delegation to the affected communities. President Bola Tinubu reportedly approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in collaboration with the Oyo State Government and directed a specialised rescue team to intensify efforts for the release of the victims.

The delegation, led by the President’s Chief of Staff, included the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Minister of Defence, and other senior officials.

Government representatives assured community leaders and residents that efforts were ongoing to restore confidence and secure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.
