Fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a pre-dawn assault on a Nigerian Army position at Kajeri, the strategic Bama–Banki–Gwoza junction in Borno State, leaving Major U.I Mairiga and several soldiers died in what security sources describe as heavy battlefield casualties.

The terrorists reportedly attacked the forward base with superior firepower, dislodging troops from parts of the camp during the initial phase of the fighting before any reinforcement or counter-offensive could stabilize the position

Major Mairiga, identified as the commanding officer at the location, was among those killed in action.
