The National Peace Committee (NPC) has recorded 60 violations of the 2027 National Peace Accord within one month of its signing, raising concerns over increasing political violence, inflammatory rhetoric and misinformation across the country.

The Committee disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja by its Chairman, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), and Convener, Most Rev. Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah.

According to the NPC, the violations were documented by its Election Security Information (ESI) Hub between August 19 and September 19, 2026.

Misinformation and disinformation topped the list, accounting for 24 incidents or 40 per cent of the recorded violations.

Attacks on political activities and assets followed with 13 incidents, representing 21.7 per cent, while political intimidation and security-related threats accounted for 10 incidents or 16.7 per cent.

The Committee also recorded six cases of political thuggery, four inflammatory statements, and one case each involving restrictions on freedom of expression, intra-party friction and voter inducement.

The NPC reminded political parties and candidates that the Peace Accord is a binding commitment and not merely a ceremonial document, urging the police and other security agencies to investigate electoral offences impartially and prosecute those responsible.

It further called for the prosecution of sponsors and financiers of political violence and demanded strict neutrality from security personnel during the electoral process.

The Committee also urged INEC to enforce campaign guidelines under the Electoral Act 2026, while advising political parties, candidates and citizens to resolve electoral disputes through lawful channels rather than retaliation.
