A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has reportedly died in a hotel in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of the town, where the lecturer had reportedly checked in with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.
According to the Edo State Police Command, Uwuigbe reportedly sent the woman to purchase water, but she returned to find him lying unresponsive in the hotel room.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the incident was reported to the police on October 5, 2026.
She said three persons, including the hotel owner, manager and the woman who was with the deceased, had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Ikoedem added that the lecturer’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, while investigation into the circumstances of his death continues.
Meanwhile, AAU Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the university.
He, however, stressed that the incident occurred outside the university campus and described the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death as a private matter.
